General B Safety Study Guide
Safety is approximately 15% of the California General Building (B) exam. The current CSLB outline includes personnel safety, transportation and traffic control, and environmental safety. Practice recognizing the hazard in a job scenario, finding the applicable control or instruction, and explaining why the safest answer fits the facts.
This independent exam-prep guide is general study guidance. For an actual job, follow current applicable requirements, site plans, qualified supervision, and the responsible authority. It does not replace safety training or legal advice.
What the official outline covers
- Personnel safety
- Transportation and traffic control
- Environmental safety
A four-step way to study scenarios
- Identify the work: what activity, equipment, location, and people does the scenario describe?
- Find the hazard: what could cause harm, and who or what could be affected?
- Check the stated control: read the site plan, manufacturer instruction, or current rule named in the study material.
- Choose and explain: select the response supported by the facts, then explain why the other choices fail.
Study matrix
| Outline group | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Personnel safety | Who is exposed, what activity creates the hazard, and what protective plan or procedure applies? |
| Transportation and traffic control | How do vehicles, deliveries, workers, and the public move through the stated area? |
| Environmental safety | What material or site condition is involved, and which handling or containment instruction governs it? |
Original study scenario
A practice scenario says a delivery truck must enter a tight work area while pedestrians use a nearby walkway. Before choosing a response, identify the pedestrian route, vehicle movement, visibility limits, and any traffic-control plan stated in the question. The supported answer should protect the people affected and follow the applicable plan; a choice based only on the fastest delivery is incomplete.
This is a reasoning exercise, not a site-specific traffic-control instruction. For a real site, use the required plan and qualified safety personnel.
Common study errors
- Choosing the quickest action without identifying who is exposed
- Memorizing a number without checking which activity or rule it applies to
- Ignoring pedestrians, neighboring work, or environmental effects
- Assuming one generic answer applies to every worksite
- Skipping the explanation after a correct guess
Readiness checklist
- I can place a scenario under one of the three official safety groups.
- I can identify the exposed people and the hazard before considering answer choices.
- I know when the scenario requires a specific current rule, plan, or qualified person.
- I can explain why an unsafe shortcut is wrong.
