Do I Need Both Trade and Law & Business Prep?

Quick answer: Most California contractor license applicants need to pass both the Law & Business exam and the trade exam for their classification. If your CSLB exam notice lists both, prepare for both. A waiver or a classification such as C-61 can change the requirement, so your notice is the final word.

What each exam covers

The trade exam tests the technical knowledge for your classification: General Building (B), Electrical (C-10), Plumbing (C-36), or another trade. Law & Business covers California contractor rules, contracts, employment, safety, business practices, liens, bonds, and insurance.

Field experience helps with the trade side, but it does not replace studying California-specific business rules. The two exams test different knowledge.

Should I study them at the same time?

Usually, yes. Alternate between trade topics and Law & Business instead of leaving one exam until the final week. Use a study guide to learn a topic, then practice questions to see what you still miss.
