California CSLB Exam Prep
Quick answer: Most California contractor licence applicants sit two exams — Law & Business and a trade exam for their classification. This page is the starting point: how the exams work, which Peerless materials map to them, and where to begin for your trade.
How the CSLB exam process works
CSLB issues licences in three groups: Class A general engineering, Class B general building, and the Class C specialities such as electrical, plumbing and HVAC. Applicants for an original licence generally pass Law & Business plus the trade exam for their classification. CSLB publishes an official study guide per classification with the topic breakdown, sample questions and reference list.
For requirements, eligibility and the application itself, see our California licensing information page and preparing for CA licensing. Those cover the process; this page covers studying for it.
Start with a free diagnostic
Before choosing materials, find out where you actually stand. Peerless publishes free practice tests across a wide range of trades, scored instantly.
- Below 70% — you need topic review before more testing
- 70–85% — you know some of it; work the weak areas and retest
- Above 85% — focus on timed practice and the questions you keep missing
Trade exam prep guides
Peerless publishes study guides for many more classifications than the four above — the full range is in the product listings on this page.
Law & Business
Every original licence applicant generally needs it, and it is the exam experienced tradespeople most often underestimate. It covers contracts, liens, employment, safety and California-specific business rules that rarely come up in day-to-day field work. See the Law & Business exam guide.
How Peerless compares to other providers
Some California providers bundle live classes, application assistance, coaching or video courses. Those are genuine advantages if you want them. Peerless is deliberately narrower: California-specific study guides and online practice exams, self-paced, at a lower price. Read the honest version on the best California exam prep comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Which exam should I study for first?
Work on both in parallel. Applicants who leave Law & Business until the final week are the ones most likely to need a retake.
Do I need a book if I have the online practice exam?
The practice exam identifies gaps; the book closes them. They work best together.
Are Peerless materials California-specific?
Yes. They are written for the California CSLB exams rather than a generic national syllabus.
Is Peerless affiliated with CSLB?
No. Peerless is an independent exam prep provider.
