The CSLB application and initial license fees
The $450 original application fee is the starting point for one classification. After the application is accepted and the other requirements are met, CSLB lists an initial license fee of $200 for a sole owner and $350 for a non-sole owner. Those two amounts create the $650 or $800 fixed CSLB subtotal; they do not include fingerprinting, exam registrations, the bond premium, or insurance.
The business structure therefore changes the starting budget by $150 before you buy study materials or arrange coverage. Choose the entity for business reasons, not simply to chase the lower fee, and confirm the current fee list before mailing an application.
Fingerprinting and exam registrations
CSLB lists $32 for the Department of Justice processing fee and $17 for the FBI processing fee. That is $49 in fixed fingerprint processing fees, but the Live Scan site adds its own rolling fee. CSLB does not set that local amount (CSLB fees).
PSI's current California contractor bulletin lists an examination fee of $51.43 for each registration, whether it is a first attempt or a repeat. If your application requires both Law and Business and a trade exam, budget for two registrations. Bond and insurance are not the same kind of cost
CSLB requires a $25,000 contractor bond or an approved alternative for an active license. That is the amount protected by the bond, not the price of the surety premium. Ask a surety provider for the actual premium and any credit or underwriting requirements before you count it as a launch expense.
Workers compensation is another variable premium. CSLB says active licensees generally need a current certificate or Certification of Self-Insurance, while an eligible no-employee licensee may file an exemption. C-8, C-20, C-22, C-39, and C-61/D-49 are listed as classifications that cannot use the no-employee exemption, so the classification affects the budget.
CSLB also states that licensees with five or fewer people listed in the personnel record need at least $1 million in cumulative general liability coverage. The requirement is a coverage limit, not a quoted premium. Get the premium from an insurer and keep the quote separate from the CSLB fees.
Study materials belong in the budget
