Preparing for CA Licensing

Preparing for Your California Contractor License Exam

Passing the CSLB contractor license exam takes preparation — but with the right materials and study strategy, you can pass on your first attempt. Here's what to expect and how to get ready.

Understand the Exam Format

The CSLB administers computer-based exams at PSI testing centers throughout California. Most exams consist of multiple-choice questions. You'll take two separate exams:

  • Law and Business — approximately 115 questions covering contractor law, safety, and business practices
  • Trade exam — question count varies by classification; covers technical knowledge for your specific trade

You must pass each exam separately with a score of 70% or higher.

Step-by-Step Study Plan

  1. Review the CSLB candidate handbook — available on cslb.ca.gov, it outlines exactly which topics are covered on your exam.
  2. Study with a Peerless study guide — our guides are written specifically for CSLB exams and cover all key topics in plain language, including California-specific laws and code references.
  3. Practice with timed exams — our online practice exams simulate the real testing environment so you can identify weak areas before exam day.
  4. Review your missed questions — don't just check your score. Read the explanations for every wrong answer to build real understanding.
  5. Schedule your exam — once you're consistently scoring above 80% on practice exams, you're ready to schedule with PSI.

Tips for Exam Day

  • Bring two valid forms of ID — one must be government-issued with a photo
  • Arrive at the testing center at least 15 minutes early
  • No reference materials, phones, or calculators are allowed in the exam room
  • Read each question carefully — many questions test whether you know California-specific rules, not just general trade knowledge
  • Flag and return to questions you're unsure about rather than spending too long on any one item

What Happens After You Pass?

Once you pass both exams, the CSLB will send you a licensing packet. You'll need to:

  • Submit a $25,000 contractor's bond
  • Provide proof of workers' compensation insurance (if applicable)
  • Pay the license issuance fee

After processing, your license will appear in the CSLB's online license lookup within a few weeks.
