How to Pass the California C-29 Masonry Contractor Exam

To prepare for the California C-29 Masonry exam, study the current CSLB outline by section, not just by job experience. Begin with a baseline, give extra attention to Personnel and Job Site Safety (20% of the outline) and other weak high-weight areas, then practice mixed scenarios until you can explain the method behind each answer.

Section-by-section study guide

Use the outline as a checklist, not a promise that every bullet gets an equal number of questions. After a diagnostic, spend extra time on weak high-weight sections.

Planning and Estimating (15%)

CSLB lists plan projects and scope of work, read plans and specifications, identify and calculate material needs, identify and calculate labor and equipment needs. Work from a plan or scope sheet: mark assumptions, units, quantities, dependencies, and any information that must be confirmed before estimating.

Job Site Preparation (16%)

CSLB lists pre-construction activities, water management, reinforcement and bracing, job site preparation. Turn each listed topic into one plan-reading, material-selection, or field-sequence question; review why the incorrect choices would fail.

Masonry Wall and Building Installation and Repair (14%)

CSLB lists CMU walls, historical masonry repair, retaining walls, and cleaning. Practice reading a wall detail, identifying the installation sequence, and checking how a proposed repair ties into the existing assembly.

Decorative Masonry Installation and Repair (11%)

CSLB lists flatwork, staircases, precast masonry, glass block, and decorative repairs. Practice reading dimensions and selecting a sequence for preparation, installation, finishing, and repair verification.

Masonry Veneer and Stone Installation and Repair (14%)

CSLB lists adhered and anchored veneers, dimensional stone, and veneer repair. Compare the supporting conditions and installation steps shown on a drawing before choosing a method.

Fireplace, Chimney, and Outdoor Cooking Area Installation and Repair (10%)

CSLB lists fireplace construction requirements, barbecue and fire pit construction requirements. Turn each listed topic into one plan-reading, material-selection, or field-sequence question; review why the incorrect choices would fail.

Personnel and Job Site Safety (20%)

CSLB lists Cal/OSHA safety requirements, elevated work, stone-slab handling, and disposal of contaminated materials. For each scenario, identify the hazard and the first safe action; check current Cal/OSHA rules for technical details.

Two-, four-, and six-week study paths

Two weeks: Use this only if you already have broad recent experience and can practice daily. Diagnose on day one; spend the next several days on Personnel and Job Site Safety (20%) and Job Site Preparation (16%); rotate through remaining sections; finish with a timed mixed set and a review of every miss or guess.

Four weeks: Week 1: read the official guide, take a baseline, and build an error log. Week 2: work the highest-weight weak sections using drawings, calculations, or installation sequences. Week 3: cover remaining trade sections and safety. Week 4: take timed mixed sets and revisit weak topics with fresh questions.

Six weeks: Add more depth to each field section and retest a week after first reviewing it. Reserve the last week for mixed practice, the error log, and test-day instructions. These are Peerless example schedules, not CSLB requirements.

Original worked C-29 Masonry example

Question: A straight masonry wall is 24 ft long. If each nominal block course covers 16 in. of length, how many blocks are needed per course before cuts or waste?

Answer: 18 blocks.

Why: 24 ft = 288 in.; 288 ÷ 16 = 18. Corners, joints, openings, and the specified unit can change a real takeoff.

This is an original study exercise, not a recalled CSLB question.

Do I also need Law and Business?

CSLB describes a separate Law and Business exam for contractor-license applicants. Check the official requirements that apply to your application.
