How Much Does a HVAC (C-20) Contractor License Cost?

How Much Does a HVAC (C-20) Contractor License Cost?

The fixed California cost to start a C-20 HVAC contractor license is usually $450 for the original application plus a $200 sole-owner or $350 non-sole-owner initial license fee. Add the $25,000 contractor bond requirement, exam registration, fingerprint processing, insurance, and the surety premium or business costs that vary by applicant.

Cost item Amount or treatment Source / note
Original application for one classification $450 Current CSLB fee table (CSLB fees)
Initial license fee, sole owner $200 Pay after the license is ready for issuance (CSLB fees)
Initial license fee, non-sole owner $350 Entity structure changes this fee (CSLB fees)
Trade examination registration $51.43 per registration in the PSI bulletin checked July 12, 2026 Each exam is separate; verify the current bulletin before paying
DOJ and FBI fingerprint processing $32 + $17 Live Scan rolling fee varies by location (CSLB fees)
Contractor bond $25,000 bond amount This is the required bond amount, not the premium (CSLB bond requirements)
Workers compensation Varies Depends on employees, classification and policy; an eligible exemption may apply

The CSLB application fees

The $450 original application is the first fixed CSLB charge for one classification. Once CSLB is ready to issue the license, the initial fee is $200 for a sole owner or $350 for a non-sole owner. These are fees, not deposits, and they are separate from the bond amount, insurance premium, study materials and business setup.

The bond is not a $25,000 payment in most cases

CSLB requires a $25,000 contractor bond on file. A surety normally charges a premium for issuing the bond; the premium is not automatically $25,000. A cashier's check alternative ties up the full bond amount. An RME or certain corporate qualifiers may require another $25,000 bond, so confirm the business structure before projecting cash needs.

Exam and fingerprint costs

PSI treats each examination as a separate registration. The bulletin checked July 12, 2026 listed $51.43 per registration, but the current bulletin controls when you schedule. CSLB's fee table lists $32 for DOJ processing, $17 for FBI processing and a Live Scan rolling fee set by the operator.

Insurance and classification-specific costs

Workers compensation is not one universal price. It depends on whether the business has employees, the classification, payroll and insurer. Some classifications or personnel arrangements affect whether an exemption is available. Do not turn a variable insurance quote into a fixed license fee.

For C-20, also budget for the study materials that fit your plan. Peerless HVAC (C-20) Study Guide Book, CSLB HVAC (C-20) practice examination, and the online practice exam is a preparation purchase, not a CSLB fee.

A realistic budgeting method

Create three columns: required CSLB charges, required compliance items, and optional preparation or operating costs. Put $450, the correct $200 or $350 initial fee, examination registrations, fingerprint processing and the bond requirement in the first two columns. Put surety premiums, insurance, local permits, tools, entity filings and study materials in the variable column. This prevents a low application fee from hiding the real launch budget.

How cost connects to licensing

The fee is only one step. You still need four years of qualifying experience, a complete application, both examinations unless a waiver applies, and the issuance documents. Review the California contractor license roadmap and prepare with Peerless HVAC (C-20) Study Guide Book, CSLB HVAC (C-20) practice examination, and the online practice exam.

FAQ

Is the $25,000 bond the price I pay?

No. It is the bond amount that must be on file. A surety premium is usually much lower but depends on the applicant and the surety. A cashier's check alternative may require the full amount to be deposited.

Does the $450 fee include both exams?

No. The original application fee is separate from PSI examination registrations. Each exam is scheduled and paid separately.

Is fingerprinting exactly $49?

CSLB's table lists $32 for DOJ processing and $17 for FBI processing, plus a Live Scan rolling fee set by the location. The final amount therefore varies.

What is the total cost for a C-20 license?

There is no single honest total without knowing the business structure, bond premium, employees, insurance, entity filings and local operating costs. Start with $450 plus $200 or $350, then add the official variable items above.
