How to Pass the California C-20 HVAC Contractor Exam

Quick answer: Build from the current CSLB outline, give the largest share of study time to Fabrication, Installation, and Startup, and use mixed practice to expose gaps in calculations, diagnostics, and safety.

Current C-20 HVAC exam outline

Official outline used: current CSLB C-20 HVAC study guide, effective for examinations scheduled on or after April 1, 2026. CSLB describes the percentages as approximate.

Official section Approximate weight What to review
Planning and Estimating 22% System design, load and psychrometric calculations, duct layout, and estimating.
Fabrication, Installation, and Startup 38% Ducts, equipment, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, refrigeration, distribution, and startup.
Troubleshooting, Repair, and Maintenance 20% Diagnostic testing, evaluation, maintenance, and repair.
Safety 20% PPE, Cal/OSHA job-site safety, and hazardous-material handling.

A six-week C-20 HVAC study plan

Peerless suggestion—not a CSLB or PSI requirement: adjust this schedule to your baseline and available time. No schedule can guarantee a passing result.

  1. Week 1: Evaluate systems, read the outline, and practice calculation, duct-layout, and estimating setups.
  2. Week 2: Study duct fabrication, equipment installation, and air distribution.
  3. Week 3: Study electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and refrigeration components, then startup.
  4. Week 4: Practice diagnostics, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair decisions.
  5. Week 5: Review PPE, job-site safety, and hazardous-material handling while revisiting weak installation topics.
  6. Week 6: Complete mixed timed sets and organize the error log by the four official sections.

Worked airflow example

A supply-duct segment serves branches requiring 500 CFM and 400 CFM. Ignoring leakage, it must carry 500 + 400 = 900 CFM. This is original arithmetic, not an actual CSLB question or a construction design.

Do not leave Law & Business until last

Applicants for an original California contractor license generally need the trade examination and Law & Business. Keep a separate study rotation and error log for the business exam.

California contractors who passed

The timer was my biggest problem. Practicing with the clock running taught me not to stay too long on one question.
